Eligible Businesses for GST Registration
For some businesses, GST registration is mandatory even if their annual turnover is below the prescribed threshold. These businesses include:
1. Interstate Suppliers
Businesses involved in the supply of goods or services across state borders must register for GST, irrespective of their turnover.
2. E-Commerce Sellers
Businesses supplying goods or services through e-commerce portals such as Amazon, Flipkart, or their own websites are required to register under GST.
3. Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) Taxpayers
Entities liable to pay tax under the Reverse Charge Mechanism must obtain GST registration, regardless of turnover.
4. Casual Taxable Persons
Businesses that operate occasionally in different states, such as seasonal businesses or event-based traders, must register as Casual Taxable Persons.
5. Non-Resident Taxable Persons
Foreign businesses or individuals supplying goods or services in India need to register under GST, even if they do not have a fixed place of business in India.
6. Input Service Distributors (ISD)
Companies that distribute input tax credit to their branches must register as Input Service Distributors (ISD).
7. Businesses Previously Registered Under Old Tax Laws
Businesses that were registered under previous tax regimes such as VAT, excise duty, or service tax must migrate to GST.
Understanding these requirements ensures compliance with GST laws and helps businesses avoid legal complications. If your business falls into any of these categories, obtaining GST registration is essential.
